Article Title: Explosive Neuromuscular Performance of the Quadriceps Muscles Following Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction: Cross-Sectional Study Protocol
Article Snippet: surgery are linked to a recalcitrant decline in quadriceps muscles’ performance.65 This decline can persist for decades after injury or ACLR,65,66 even with treatment.72 Quadriceps muscles’ performance deficits may impair knee function and quality of life (QoL)2,6,70 and contribute to elevated risk of post-traumatic osteoarthritis.51 Little is known about why this decline occurs, or if it can be prevented or reduced.. While ACL tear/ACLR-related quadriceps strength impairments are well documented,11,65 less is known about the quadriceps muscles’ ability to rapidly contract and produce force in response to neuromuscular activation, referred to as explosive neuromuscular performance (ENP).25 Rapid force production is essential for sport-related (sprinting, jumping, kicking)1 and daily (descending stairs, walking briskly) tasks that require force development within 50– 250 ms.1,50,62 Quadriceps muscles ENP is also relevant for ACL injury and reinjury prevention, given that noncontact ACL tears usually occur within 50 ms of ground contact,38 and quadriceps muscles pre-activity occur 50 ± 20 ms prior to ground contact.8,59,63 i OBJECTIVES: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears and subsequent reconstruction surgery are associated with a recalcitrant decline in quadriceps muscles’ performance, which can persist for decades, contributing to impaired function, elevated osteoarthritis risk, and poor quality of life.. Little is known about why this decline occurs, or if it can be prevented.

Correlation between non-volitional and maximal voluntary quadriceps force measured by the strain gauge ( n = 92).

Journal: Chronic Respiratory Disease

Article Title: Validity and reliability of strain gauge measurement of volitional quadriceps force in patients with COPD

doi: 10.1177/1479972316687210

Figure Lengend Snippet: Correlation between non-volitional and maximal voluntary quadriceps force measured by the strain gauge ( n = 92).

Article Snippet: To determine validity, maximal volitional quadriceps force was evaluated during isometric maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) manoeuvre via a fixed strain gauge dynamometer and compared to (a) potentiated non-volitional quadriceps force obtained via magnetic stimulation of the femoral nerve (twitch (Tw); n = 92) and (b) volitional computerized dynamometry (Biodex; n = 46) and analysed via correlation coefficients.
