Article Title: Volumetric ultrasound and photoacoustic imaging of inflammatory arthritis in human finger joints via robotic arm powered arc scans
Journal: Biomedical Optics Express
doi: 10.1364/BOE.577240
Figure Legend Snippet: For each scan, the US probe is manually aligned with the sagittal axis of the finger, a process that requires less than one minute. From this initial position, the robotic arm executes both linear and arc scanning trajectories. The acquired 2D images are subsequently subjected to motion compensation and reconstructed into a 3D volumetric dataset.
Techniques Used:
Figure Legend Snippet: Interpolation procedure for 3D volumetric image reconstruction from a sequence of collected 2D B-mode US images from arc scan. (a): Spatial alignment between end-effector and US probe frames. Each probe frame is offset by 12.8 cm along the local Y-axis and aligned to maintain rotational symmetry about the pivot. (b): B-mode images are plotted in 3D space, and acoustic intensities are interpolated at regularly spaced query points using weighted contributions from the two closest scan planes. The inset illustrates distances d i 1 and d i 2 from a sample query point to neighboring B-scan planes, which are used to compute the interpolated intensity.
Techniques Used: Sequencing
Figure Legend Snippet: Normalized volumetric rendering of multimodal images of the PIP3 joint of the healthy volunteer acquired through the linear and arc scans. (a–c): Volumetric renderings of the results from the linear scan: B-mode US images (a), B-mode US images with CFM signals overlaid (b), and B-mode US images with PA signals overlaid (c). (d–f): Volumetric renderings of the results from the arc scan: B-mode US images (d), B-mode US images with CFM signals overlaid (e), and B-mode US images with PA signals overlaid (f).
